Relationships and Recovery

Every client that comes to see me is concerned with some type of  relationship.  Some are worried about their relationship with a spouse.  Others are concerned about children, boyfriends or their boss.  Still others are concerned about their relationship with drugs, alcohol or pornography.  No topic is more important in recovery than relationships, because life is just a series of relationships.  Relationships are “all we got”.

It is suggested that those in early recovery not make any changes in relationships for at least one year.  This means don’t get divorced or begin dating someone new until a foundation of recovery is established upon which a relationship can be built.  The exception of course is when a person is not able to stop using or drinking as a result of their relationship with another.  A common example would be when two young adults are both addicted to heroin.  It’s not likely a girl would be able to quit while still living with a boyfriend who’s still using.

If a person thought he had good financial management skills, the true test would come with the receipt of a large inheritance.  Would one be cautious and prudent?  Would one stick to the principles of sound money management or would reflexive purchases be rationalized by saying that “Uncle Charlie would ‘want’ me to have this.”?  The truth is that relationships can tell us so much about a person’s recovery.  Character defects which are uncovered during the inventory process of steps 4 & 5 can be dealt with in steps 6 & 7.  Relationships offer a barometer by which to judge progress.

So how are your relationships today?  Are you judging others or finding yourself loosing patience with another?  Freedom can be found in letting go of the need to control outcomes of any type.  Are you content to just let others be themselves?  If you are struggling with relationships, give Heartland Intervention a call today.  Our number is 877/752-8811.  We are ready to help you evaluate your progress and strengthen your relationships.
