Steve’s Recovery Story

September is National Recovery Month.  To celebrate, Heartland Intervention is bringing you stories of recovery.  Below is Steve’s story.

“I was married with a good job and two kids.  From the outside looking in, I had everything.  The problem was that I was angry all of the time.  My “social” drinking had progressed to a daily thing but I never got arrested, never lost a job and had no health issues.  Alcohol was the answer to most of my problems.  Yet the more I drank the angrier I got.”

“One night I was seeing red and just in a rage.  In a moment of clarity I admitted that the problem wasn’t the anger…it was the alcohol.  That has been over nine years ago and I haven’t had a drink since.  My recovery began with an Intensive Outpatient Program and had AA meetings.  I still try to make it to 3 or 4 meetings a week.”

“What I expected from Alcoholics Anonymous was not what I got.  I expected a bunch of losers with whom I would have nothing in common.  Yet AA has given me a program of living that has resulted in  great friends, peace, serenity and it’s rare that I get angry anymore.  I’ve learned about tolerance, willingness, acceptance and grown in ways that make others proud of me.  Working the steps has been an adventure rather than work.  I’m more useful and less judgemental than I ever imagined.  Recovery doesn’t ever have to end.  There are more lessons to learn and more people to help.”

Steve’s story is like many  who once struggled with substance abuse or other addictions.  If you know someone like Steve, give Heartland Intervention a call today at 877/752-8811.  Your loved one can soon begin their recovery adventure.
